What’s wrong with this picture? I’d say nothing – but some critics used words like “disgusting” and “appalling” to describe this photo that went viral after appearing on the front page of the Taranaki Daily News.
Taranaki, a region in the western part of New Zealand, holds an annual Bride of the Year Competition and Katrina Hayman, pictured backstage with the bottled beverage above, was one of this year’s 34 participating women.
When asked why she was drinking a beer, she told a Taranaki Daily reporter, “At your wedding you’re relaxed because you have your family and friends around for support, but in the competition you are sort of all by yourself. It was quite stressful.”
If you ask me, that’s more of a response than they deserved. Why should she have to explain herself? What’s wrong with drinking a beer?
A picture of her groom with a big day brew could be material for the cover of GQ or Esquire but somehow the fact that she’s a woman makes this inappropriate? Not cool.
Hayman is already resisting traditional gender roles by working on a farm as a pig midwife, and apparently she feels the same as I do about women and beer: “I don’t like to portray myself as someone I am not. A lot of females drink beer and it’s just I felt more comfortable having a beer than having a glass of wine.”
A New Zealand news website called Stuff.co.nz recently posted a poll asking readers if they think drinking beer is “becoming for a bride?”
62.4% percent voted “Absolutely,” while 13.6% said “No, it’s tacky,” and the remaining 24% said “OK, but out of an elegant glass please.”
Apparently a lot of women out there agree with Katrina Hayman and I. What do you guys think? Tacky, tolerable, or totally acceptable? I say the latter.
