The Oktoberfest celebration in Munich is well underway and even if you can’t make it to Germany this year, you may be throwing an Oktoberfest party in your neck of the woods. So, what food should you serve with the traditional Märzen brews?
What immediately comes to mind, of course, is traditional German fare (which I positively LOVE). Things like sausages, wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut and the like are perfect matches for Oktoberfest beers. Of course, not everyone loves German food as much as I do. So, what do you pair with your Märzen if you don’t dig traditional wursts?
Believe it or not, options are plentiful. Do you prefer a good steak for friendly get-togethers? Oktoberfest beer tastes great with steak, hot off the grill, as long as you steer clear of super-acidic sauces, like tangy steak sauces (which, admittedly, I only ever use on a burger anyway).
Speaking of burgers, your Oktoberfest brews will taste great with these too, just don’t drown the patty in barbecue sauce, ketchup or yellow mustard (sweet mustard would work fine though).
Sweet-sauce pizza is another superb match for Märzen. Bready malts in the beer pair nicely with the tomato sauce, crust and most toppings, while the light hops and crisp carbonation keep the meal from being cloying.
Have some vegetarians in the mix? Match Oktoberfest with hummus and pita and you’ll have a crowd pleaser every time.
If you know of any other foods you simply love pairing with Oktoberfest Märzen, please let me know! I’d love to try them myself.
