I recently received an email with a link to this NPR program from 2004 and the discussion was centered on the marketing of top shelf vodkas. As they’re talking about brands and quality, they receive a call from a guy who claims that when filtered through a Brita charcoal filter, pretty much any vodka will taste just as smooth as the super-premium brands. You may need to pour it through 3, 4 or 5 times but apparently the process rids all of the impurities out of unfiltered brands.
The popular show MythBusters put the idea to the test in 2006 and their double-blind taste test proved that the cheap vodka did indeed taste better with every subsequent filtration. However, the top-shelf vodka still beat them all.
A chemical analysis showed no actual difference between the filtered and unfiltered cheap vodka but the idea is still pretty intriguing.
Maybe we’ll have to buy a bottle of Barton’s and bring a Brita into the office to find out first hand. If you’ve tried it already, let us know how well it works for you.
