Designing for Durability: Protecting Brass Finishes at the Bar
By Kegworks | 08 May, 2025
architectural metalIn hospitality design, materials must not only look beautiful, but they also need to perform. Bar foot rails, drink rails, bar shelving, and other architectural metal details endure constant contact, spills, and movement. With additional protection, the stunning look of the space you’ve designed can be extended well past the standard wear and tear it would typically see.
That’s why at Kegworks, we offer protective coatings that extend the life of your design. Whether it’s a classic brass foot rail or a brushed brass drink rail, we help preserve the finish and the experience.
Clear Coat Protection for Brass
When it comes to bar and hospitality design, both polished and brushed brass are classic elements that enhance the ambiance. Untreated (or unlacquered) brass will develop a natural patina over time. While some designers appreciate the look of aged brass, others prefer to maintain the finish in its original polished or brushed appearance.
For those who want to retain the original luster, Kegworks offers clear coat protection as a special order option for bar foot rail systems and bar shelving. This durable, invisible layer shields brass from oxidation and slows the aging process, reducing the need for polishing or touch-ups. It’s ideal for high-traffic spaces, ensuring your design continues to impress long after installation.
Cerakote for Drink Rail
Brass is an excellent choice for foot rail and shelving, but when it comes to drink rail, there’s a better way to achieve that signature look without sacrificing durability. Given its malleable nature and tendency to patina, brass does not necessarily age well when up against the daily grind of a commercial bar. Because brass cannot be welded, it is not suitable for custom-radius drink rail systems. Having said that, for those looking for an aged and weathered look, Kegworks can manufacture straight lengths of brass drink rail and drip trays.
In situations where a client has a radius project or would like the drink rail to retain its luster, Kegworks offers an electroplated brass finish with Cerakote protection. The electroplated finish is applied in either a mirror-polished or brushed brass finish on top of a stainless steel substrate and is protected by a thin film of Cerakote. Cerakote is a ceramic-based coating originally developed for aerospace and firearms, making it more than tough enough for a bustling bar. Its superior abrasion and corrosion resistance make it the perfect protection against the daily wear that drink rail and drip trays are bound to see.
Drink rail sits prominently along the bar top, serving as a key visual element in your project. From repeated guest interactions to ongoing upkeep, this surface should maintain its elegance while delivering long-term value. Adding a Cerakote coating can help ensure it stays durable and visually appealing.
