The Old Fashioned Cocktail is one of the best ways to enjoy your favorite bourbon or rye whiskey.
Heralded as the archetype cocktail, the Old Fashioned Cocktail is a simple mix of sugar, water, bitters, and liquor. It’s roots dating back to 1806, it may be one of the oldest cocktails known to modern man.
The documentation of the word ‘cocktail’ was first read in a Hudson, New York paper, The Balance and Columbian Repository. The publication wrote that a ‘cocktail’ was a strong concoction of spirits, bitters, water and sugar. A.k.a the bittered sling.
Fast forward to 1881 and the first use of the name ‘Old Fashioned’ was said to have been at a gentlemen’s club in Louiseville, Kentucky, the Pendennis Club, specifically siting bourbon in the drink.

Old Fashioned Cocktail
Yield: 1 Cocktail
- 1 sugar cube
- 2 oz rye whiskey
- 1 dash Angostura Bitters
- Orange peel (for garnish)
- Lemon peel (for garnish)
- Luxardo Gourmet Maraschino Cocktail Cherries

Place one sugar cube in the bottom of a mixing glass. Saturate the sugar cube with bitters, then crush it lightly with a muddler. Add rye whiskey and ice to the mixing glass. Give the whole thing a few good stirs, then strain the mixture into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange and/or lemon peel (squeeze the peel and rim the glass with its essential oils for an extra kick of citrus) and a gourmet cocktail cherry.
