The last time I was on a beer run and I had to make some choices, I uttered the statement “I’ve had a major crush on Unibroue lately.” It’s true. I’m a big fan of the brewery and I consume La Fin du Monde on a somewhat regular basis. Their Blanche de Chambly is one of my favorite witbiers and I like the Maudite (red ale) a lot too.
In an effort to prove my point (that they’re a crush-worthy brewery) and also try something new, I picked up a 4-pack of Trois Pistoles, the Abbey Style Strong Dark Ale (along with some other stuff).
Holy perfection in a bottle Batman! I tend to be all about the malt lately and this stuff is too. The slightly sweet, full malt flavor really dominates and the hops are mellow enough to let the accents of fruit, chocolate and spice come through. It’s really balanced and while you can taste the alcohol in the finish, it’s really smooth and drinkable. Actually, it’s almost too drinkable for a beer weighing in at 9% ABV.
It honestly and truly is a treat. The next time I need a beer to look forward to, I’ll remember the “Three Pistols” and ultimately end up one very happy girl. Considering Unibroue hasn’t let me down yet, their Éphémère Apple is next on my list of beers that I need to hunt down.
