Partake in the British naval tradition of enjoying a 1/2 gill of rum with this solid copper cup with an inner silver lining and a wishbone handle. The gill was an older unit of liquid measurement. In the United States a gill was equal to a one-half cup or four fluid ounces, while in England a gill was equivalent to five ounces.
Sailors in the British Royal Navy received a daily ration (known as a tot) of a 1/2 gill of rum. The tot was served in a copper mug. Sailors in lower ranks received their tot diluted with two parts water to create a half pint of grog. Lime juice was also added to help prevent scurvy. The practice was ended by the British government in 1970, but you can revive the tradition by enjoying a daily tot of your favorite rum with this Behind The Bar® Naval Rum Measure.
