Cocktail bitters are spirits infused with flavors, typically from plants, fruits, or spices. They date as far back as the early 1800's, originally used to assist with digestion and cure stomach aches. Like all bottlings of Angostura's classic formula, this economy size version is made from a secret blend of more than 40 spices and botanicals. The recipe was developed in 1824 as a medical elixir by D. J.G.B. Siebert, who was serving as surgeon general of Simón Bolívar's army in Angostura, Venezuela. The bitters were quickly adopted by the burgeoning American bartending community, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In 1875, production of Angostura moved to Trinidad, where they are still produced according to the same storied recipe. As the quintessential aromatic bitters, Angostura adds a layer of complexity, intensifies the flavor of other ingredients, and counteracts acidity and alcohol heat in cocktails.
