Cocktail bitters are spirits infused with flavors, typically from plants, fruits, or spices. They date as far back as the early 1800's, originally used to assist with digestion and cure stomach aches. Infusing your cocktail recipes with just a few drops of bitters will give them an additional level of flavor depth. Many bitters are also renowned for their ability to cure hangovers.
Like all bottlings of Angostura's classic formula, this economy size version is made from a secret blend of more than 40 spices and botanicals. The recipe was developed in 1824 as a medical elixir by a doctor serving as surgeon general of Simón Bolívar's army in Angostura, Venezuela. The bitters were quickly adopted by the burgeoning American bartending community, and the rest, as they say, is history.
In 1875, production of Angostura moved to Trinidad, where they are still produced according to the same legendary recipe. As the world's quintessential aromatic bitters, Angostura adds depth, intensifies the flavor of other ingredients, and counteracts acidity and alcohol heat in cocktails.
A few dashes of Angostura bitters are required in classic Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, and Mai Tais, making a bottle of Angostura a must-have ingredient at your home or commercial bar. Add a dash of bitters (or two) to everything from cocktails to haute cuisine and enjoy the unique savoriness that is unmistakably Angostura!
