Bar Foot Rail Brackets Guide

By Kegworks | 11 April, 2023

architectural metal

Bar rail brackets are an integral part of any bar rail project. Seriously, without them, your bar rail would just be a piece of tubing laying on the floor.

Choosing the right bracket for mounting your bar rail requires several considerations. While the brackets' visual appeal is important, you also have to consider the type of surface to which you are going to mount your bar rail tubing. KegWorks offers a variety of brackets to fit any method of bar foot rail installation.

Styles of Bar Rail Brackets

Brackets can be mounted to either the front of your bar or the floor below it as well as brackets that attach both surfaces to secure your bar foot rail in place. When deciding on which surface to use, make sure the material of your bar face or floor is able to be drilled into and that it can properly support the weight of your foot rail.

Bar Mount Brackets

Bar mount brackets are brackets that mount directly to the face of your bar. These brackets are easiest to clean under and give your bar a unique look. One advantage to using bar mount brackets is that it allows you to choose a custom height for your bar foot rail. This comes in handy if you need brackets taller than the standard 6". Most of the other brackets will be mounted at a fixed height from the floor. These brackets come with a threaded back access bolt is used for weight-bearing, so you MUST have access to the back of the bar to install these brackets:

Combination Brackets

Combination bar foot rail bracket

Combination bar rail brackets are our most popular style because they are easy to install and have a classic look. They mount to the face of the bar and rest on the floor for support. Unlike our basic bar mount brackets, you do not need access to the back of the bar to install the combination brackets. The height of a combination bracket bar foot rail is approximately 6" (measured from the floor to the center of the area for the tubing). The combination bracket will sit approximately 6"-7" away from the facing of your bar.

Floor Mount Brackets

Floor mount bar foot rail bracket

If you guessed that floor mount brackets mount to the floor, you are correct! As with combination brackets, this eliminates the need for access to the back of your bar for installation. Floor mount brackets give you the added flexibility of installing them closer or farther away from the facing of your bar as desired. A floor mount bracket will avoid any risk of damage that could be caused by mounting a rail directly onto a bar. When mounted properly, the bar rail will sit 5.5"-6" off the floor.

90-degree Brackets

90 degree bar foot rail bracket

KegWorks exclusive 90-degree brackets attach securely to both the face of your bar (or wall) and the floor for extra stability. With two contact points, this double-footed bar rail bracket combines a sturdy build and a practical design. The included 1 Ā½ā€ mounting screws make installation extremely simple. These brackets sit exactly 5.89" from the floor to the center of the tubing, and 5.89" from the facing of the bar to the center of the tubing.

Center Post Brackets

center post bar foot rail bracket

Center post brackets are great for use as either a bar foot rail or bar handrail. Their low-profile design makes them extra versatile. These brackets are just 4.5" in total height. Center post brackets sit approximately 3.5" from the floor, bar facing, or wall that they are mounted upon to the center of the tubing. They can fit in tight spaces, be used as handrail, or be used as foot rail for bars with lower chairs or stools.

Rounded Center Post Brackets

rounded center post bar foot rail bracket

Rounded center post brackets and tall rounded center post brackets are exclusive to KegWorks, and add a slightly different touch than the center post brackets. Since there is only one support point with these brackets, it’s best to space these rounded center posts no more than 36 inches apart for stability. They sit approximately 4.75" from the floor to the center of the tubing.

For those that want their bar rail installed higher or if your stools are higher up, then rounded center posts provide you with extra options when it comes to installation. Tall rounded center posts sit approximately 6.5"-7" from the floor to the center of the tubing.

Contemporary Brackets

Contemporary bar foot rail bracket

Contemporary brackets are our most versatile style of bar rail brackets. They combine a stylish, modern appearance with the ability to be mounted to the face of your bar or to the floor in front of your bar. For bar-mounted applications, they are installed in the same manner as traditional bar mount brackets with three mounting screws and a threaded bolt that mounts from behind the bar. If you go with the floor-mounted method for installation, then you only need to use the mounting screws to secure the brackets to your surface. These are a great option if you’re not completely sure on how to mount your bar rail or want to explore both options further.

Custom Bar Rail Brackets

Custom Bar Rail Brackets

Custom brackets are an excellent solution if you need brackets that are taller than normal. KegWorks Bar Rail Experts can have custom bar rail brackets fabricated to match your project’s specifications based on a technical drawing that you supply. The custom brackets are constructed to spec using stainless steel to ensure a durable and affordable solution, and then powder coated to match the finish of your bar rails.

Industrial Black Pipe Brackets

Black Pipe Bar Foot Rail Bracket

Industrial black pipe bar foot rail is becoming a very popular style. Instead of brackets, industrial black pipe bar rail is secured by using a connector piece and 90 degree elbow that screws into a flange that is mounted to the floor. The strength of the industrial black pipe style allows the installer flexibility in desired height. The connector piece is 4" tall when fully screwed in, but they can sit up to 7" off the ground and still maintain their durability.

How many brackets will you need?

When planning your bar rail project, knowing exactly how many brackets you’ll need before you order your tubing and components is important. Laying out how your project will look will help you determine this. For best practice, use painter’s tape to map out exactly where you plan to put the bar rail and make a sketch. Your brackets should be placed 6 inches from each end of the rail (at most) and every 4 feet through the middle for proper support.

How high should your bar foot rail be?

The bar foot rail height from the floor will depend on the bracket you choose. For certain brackets, you can decide the height of a bar foot rail from the floor. With other brackets, the proper bar foot rail height is fixed. The bar rail will sit approximately 6" from the floor to the center of the bar rail. For example, if you have 8 feet of tubing, you’ll need one bracket on each end and one in the center, for a total of three brackets.

We have a complete guide to Planning & Installing Bar Foot Rail to help you get started with your bar rail project.

Without the sturdy support of bar foot rail brackets, you’d never be able to install a comfortable bar rail in your space. That’s why we carry a variety of bar foot rail brackets in easy-to-install styles and finishes. No matter which finish or bracket style you choose, you can be sure that a bar foot railing will offer comfort and style for years to come.

Hey Dale,

We have all kinds of quality wood bar rail molding for arm rests, though not padded. Here's a good how-to on choosing and installing these arm rests as well.

Hope that's helpful, cheers!

do you guys have any guidelines or insight in how your product can be used to address ADA requirements/protection. Is there a specific height it should be mounted at or within on a barface to conform to ADA requirements?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Dino,

We do offer ADA compliant handrails in a grippable, diamond scale design. They are not recommended for use as a commercial bar foot rail though. For ADA compliance, handrails should be between 34"-38" above walking surfaces, stair nosings, and ramp surfaces. They should also be at a consistent height.

Hi David, you could use bar mount brackets or combination brackets that rest on the floor without drilling.

Hi, Bob! We don't recommend black pipe for outdoor installation because it is susceptible for corrosion unless you plan clear coating it before hand.

Would a 2" rail bracket work with 2" diameter scaffold pole as a rail?

David Buchanan
December 28, 2020, 9:54 pm

Hi, Chris. It would depend on the material of the pole. If it's constructed from a material that can withstand the weight of someone leaning/standing on it then it should work.

Hi, Peter. I checked with our bar rail experts and they say it's impossible to properly install it that low. 5" is about as low as you could get.

My bar has a wood platform. I want to secure the rail to the platform, and still be sturdy, without screwing from the bottom.
Will any of your risers meet my needs?

Need to find out what size screws that are provided for bar foot rail support have to go into cement floor

Stefan Kostecki
April 11, 2022, 7:55 pm

I have a customer looking for a foot rail for his bar. It is an 'L' shaped foot rail. He would like the legths to be 55-1/2" x 30" wall mounted (Not floor or combination). He would like this to have a sharp 90 degree angle where the 2 meet. Black in colour. I am not sure of the style of bracket, something clean and simple.

Based on the lengths and the style of mounting can you please price this out for the length and the correct number of brackets that will be needed?

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Stefan
