Keg Coupler List: Picking the Right Coupler for Your Favorite Beer
By Kegworks | 09 July, 2012
draft beer
A keg coupler is a key element of any draft beer system. It's a small but vital piece of equipment that connects the gas and beer lines to your keg. Pressurized gas (either CO2 or nitrogen depending on the type of beer being dispensed) flows into the side of the keg coupler through an air line and the beer flows out through a beer line attached to the top. Check out our guide for more information on how a keg coupler works or to troubleshoot common keg coupler problems.
Even though all keg couplers are similar in appearance and function, youāll need to make sure youāve got the right style for the keg you want to tap. Use the chart below to determine which keg coupler type corresponds with your favorite beer. Can't find the beer you're looking for? Ask your local distributor which coupler you should use!

What are the dimensions of a 1/4 keg and 1/6 keg of pilsner urquell? i want to know if I have room in my kegerator
Caleb Houseknecht
June 15, 2015, 4:46 pm
Hey Dennis!
If it's a standard 1/4 Barrel, the diameter should be 16-1/8," and the height 13.
If it's a standard 1/6 Barrel, the diameter should be 9-1/4," and the height 23.
Hope that helps!

Which type of coupler does steigl beer use?
Caleb Houseknecht
July 13, 2015, 1:59 pm
Hey there, Jim,
To be honest, we are not quite sure. We did some research and couldn't find anything either. I would suggest contacting them through this form - https://www.stiegl.at/en/contact. If you find out, let us know so we can add it to our list. Sorry about that, and we hope you're able to find out!

Hey,
Which type of coupler do i need for Falco/Molotov Cocktail?
It seems to be S, but it's not. I took a shower with a S coupler...
D????
Thanks
Caleb Houseknecht
August 12, 2015, 2:49 pm
Hey Ben,
I spoke with two of our draft beer experts and both suggested a D coupler. It has a shorter probe, and if you got sprayed with S, it was likely because the unengaged probe was hitting the keg valve. Definitely try a D, and let us know if that works!

Is a 1/6 keg available in either Pilsner Urquell or Staropramen?
Caleb Houseknecht
September 17, 2015, 2:17 pm
Hey Larry,
Sorry for the delayed response here. We'd suggest checking with your local distributor! It all depends on where you live and/or how far you're willing to drive to get it. Hope that helps!

I do not see Schlosseggenberg on your list. It looks like and fits a D coupler, but the ball bearing is too low.

Do you know what style coupler Andechs uses?
Caitlin Hartney
March 4, 2016, 2:14 pm
Hi, Ron. Because beer comes from different distributors who may be selling different iterations of that beer, we recommend you contact the distributor from whom you are planning on buying it. They should be able to tell you which coupler to use.

What couplers to soda companies like Pepsi use?
Caitlin Hartney
April 6, 2016, 2:52 pm
Hi, Steve. Modern soda is dispensed via a Bag-in-Box system; it is not pre-mixed. So, Pepsi wouldn't use couplers.
Steve

Some companies still use kegs. I have an opportunity to buy some used soda kegs for a good price but I want to make sure that they'll be compatible before I spend the money.

Just tapped a keg of Stiegl Radler (Grapefruit) and it is a type S coupler. Initially tried a D and would get a slight spritz when opening the faucet after connecting with a D, but it wasn't actually opening the valve, so had to switch to the S with the slightly longer probe.

Why are there all these different connector types? Is it because every brewer wants some sort of "exclusivity" that only their beer can be served with a tap? Is it dependent on functionalities/the beer type?

I was told by my local beer distributor that kegs of Estrella Damm Lager, although they use an S coupler, are only for commercial use. They said there is no way to use them on a kegorator because of some limitation or control feature that prevents its use. Do any of you know anything about this.. I've never heard of anything like that.

They used a G coupler. The same that Fullers uses.By the way Fullers London Porter is the best and their ESB is untouchable,a bit pricey.I live in NYC and it cost about $250 for a 50 Liter, but if you can swing it you will never have another Bass.Their London Pride is only OK.

November 27, 2018, 4:45 pm
Hi Susan: I solved my issue using an "A" coupler with a German Paulaner Keg in my Kegerator by using a 90 degree stainless steel connector & a 4 pipe clamps. It made a nice 90 degree curve at top & I was able to squeeze it in the kegerator without messing up the line or tap or beer!
Hans
November 30, 2018, 5:37 am
I can confirm the 1/2 barrel takes an S coupler. Recently purchased and finished off the keg. No comment on the 1/6 barrel. Stella on draft was incredible. I'd never been that impressed with it in the bottle before. Seemed like the type of beer that would show up at an office Christmas party because it's perceived as fancy. On tap was a whole nother story. Delicious! Now if they could just bring the price down.

I have an old barrel shaped keg with 2 holes on the side and one on the base or top. bottom of keg says Budwiser St louis mo, AB 15-15.5-661. Side hole has a solid wood bung and other 2 have valves with a diamond shaped stem. Do you know what type of tap that would open this valve? you can see an example here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vintage-Firestone-Barrel-Keg-Beer-Stainless-Steel-Container-Cans-EMPTY-/112666798801

April 3, 2019, 1:22 pm
Hi Costas,
I would recommend contacting American Solera directly. They have many different styles of beers at their brewery. With so many different styles, the coupler is likely dependent on which beer style you're serving.
Chris
April 3, 2019, 1:50 pm
Hi Mike,
Since English Milds are typically served from a cask, there isn't a lot of information out there on the coupler to use. That also may be contributing to the foaming issues you're experiencing. I would recommend calling the brewery directly, as they work with that specific beer on a daily basis.

There isn't a lot of information out there on that specific beer, but as a German pilsner, it is very likely to use an A-System keg coupler.

Hi Tony,
When kegging a home brew, most people choose a Corny, or Cornelius keg, though there are other options such as cask ale. It would depend on the beer you want to serve, and how you wish to serve it. If you want to discuss the specifics of your system, our draft beer experts at Customer Care can be reached at 877.636.3673, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm EST. You can also reach out here.

Hi David,
That is tough to tell just from the pictures there, but our best guess is either a Golden Gate coupler or maybe a Hoff-Stevens, though we'd lean more toward the Golden Gate. Would definitely advise contacting the seller, or if you're the seller, the place where you originally purchased it from.

Hi John,
Our Guinness on Tap blog and video gives step-by-step instructions for how to switch between couplers and beer styles in the context of switching from a CO2 system to a stout system. Hope that helps!

Hi Roger,
The specifics of your draft system setup can definitely play a major role in the perfect PSI to pour your beer at. However, as a rule of thumb, Yuengling and other lagers should be poured between 10-14 PSI generally.

Hi Denver, you want to make sure your fridge is big enough to hold your keg and also have room for the coupler to connect to the top of the keg. Cheers!

Hi Dougie, I would reach out to the brewery to ask. I'm not sure which style keg they would use since they're in the UK.

I have a keg tapper from the late 1970s it is a standup pump type that fit a Stroh's beer keg. Will this fit any currant types of kegs. Thank you for your reply

Hi, Donald. Your pump should still fit most standard domestic kegs.

What is the shortest possible "A" coupler? I have a Spaten Octoberfest and I am trying to get it in my nostalgic kegerator and the area from the keg connector to the inide of the kegorator is maybe 4 1/4 inches. I need a lo-boy and can't seem to find a type "A".

Hi, Chuck. We only carry one A-system coupler that is 4.5" inches tall. There doesn't appear to be a low-boy option for that coupler at this time.

Just FYIFrom Delirium Tremens US distributors:
at BBL, Inc. thank you for reaching out about your sixtel of Delirium Tremens. You are correct that it's an American-style Sankey. We switched a lot of our cooperage over to Microstar US-style kegs several years ago. Although there are still a few 20L kegs with Euro Couplers out there.

I was unable to tap a 30litre peroni keg. I do have a D coupler. It clamped on tight. Lots of gas in tank. Just wouldn't break the seal.

Hi I recently managed to get a keg of Lagunitas. I think it's a 23L keg like u get from a pub. I know they are an amarcan company. Busy Heineken bought them out in 2015. So what coupling do I need. The S or D cuppling. Thannks. I'm also in the UK.

Having an argument and hoping you can resolve for me please :-
Can you put 'out of date beer' from a Keg through the Temprite system for beer pouring practice???
I say no for contamination reasons, will not have the proper head etc.
Am I right ???

Hello,
Any idea which keg coupler should be used to tap a keg of LaMarca Prosecco? I tried the U type and the G type but no success.
Everything seems to be pointing me towards a G type but the coupler would not engage.
Thanks!
